Meet the Author

Deborah K Davis

I was born in Los Angeles, California. Soon thereafter, I was off with my international family to travel the world on planes, trains and cruise ships. My Canadian father and Spanish mother often decided to stay for a while in foreign ports, sometimes for a month, and sometimes for several years. As major fans of fine food and wine, they introduced me to the world of high cuisine. By the time I was eight, I had shaken the hands of dozens of ship captains, dined at their tables, learned to order and comment on food in several languages, and enjoyed sampling recipes from all over the globe, from street food vendors to some of the most famous restaurants in the world.

I returned to Los Angeles as an adult to begin a career in the entertainment industry, focusing on film and television production and finance. After learning the business by working with some of the biggest hitters in Hollywood, I formed my own production company and worked with media projects for more than 30 years. Along the way, I began supporting rescue and foster organizations for wildlife and domestic animals focusing mainly on dogs. I fostered many types of animals, some of which ended up as permanent residents when it became just too difficult to let go.

My inspiration for this book started with my loving, fuzzy, baby Bellissima, a white Chihuahua/Maltese. Before long, Bella had some sisters, Daisy, Bebe, and Bootsie (also known as “Piglet”). Bella became my service dog and at my side as a saving grace in my life, through the best and worst of times. She now has a new role as my companion in cuisine, loyal sous chef and professional taster. All of the recipes in this book have been tested by Bella and I am confident that if they get the bark of approval from her, they will surely satisfy the taste and comfort of the pickiest and most pampered of dogs everywhere.

May 1st, 1938 - June 16, 2019 (Father’s Day)

This book is dedicated to my beloved dad who passed away on Father's Day, 2019. He taught me since birth to love all animals, especially dogs. My father was a strong man but a kind soul. His passion for food and world travels taught me to enjoy many different cultures and types of cuisine. This in turn made me appreciate good food and become a food connoisseur and proud home cook. Dad, you will be sorely missed, never forgotten and always loved. I’m sure that our family dogs that have passed on are frolicking with you in heaven.

After my father’s passing, my inheritance came in the form of a 17-pound Chihuahua named Bootsie (AKA) “Piglet” or “Piggy,” a truly funny character. She is a testament that a little extra care and moderation towards your dog’s diet can make a big difference. She now weighs 7 pounds and has stopped snoring, but she still loves her gourmet cuisine. Although she has lost her extra pounds she will never lose her nickname due to her wobbly walk, originally big round pink tummy and bubbly personality. My Dad would have loved this book and would be very happy for Piggy.

During these unprecedented times, animal shelters have been emptied and we are seeing some of the highest numbers of adoptions from animal rescue groups in history. Pets are filling the void created by isolation, loneliness and disconnection. All this was brought on by the Covid19 pandemic.

Whether they be domestic or wild, large or small, feathered, furred or scaled, her passion for them is unrelenting. As long as I have known Deborah, she has donated extensively to animal causes of all varieties. Whether it be financial or more importantly, her valuable personal time.
